Hand drawn flowers and Ooku watercolors – card idea 1

Hi friends, one of the goals I set for myself for 2019 is to draw / sketch more and also play more with watercolors. I used to love all sketching when I was in college and wanted to get back into it a little more. Here’s my first card:

I wanted to keep it simple for the first time after years, so I die cut a heart using My Favorite Things largest of the stitched hearts dies so that I could get by with only a small image. I scrolled through several Pinterest images for inspiration and then drew one flower from my head. I also added some delicate leaves on the side.

Fun fact about me: growing up, my favorite things to doodle were either eyes, or leaves or bindi designs. Last few pages of my notebooks would often be filled with these. Did you also doodle? What were somethings you liked to draw? Let me know in the comments below… :-)

Once I was happy with my pencil sketch, I went over the lines with Prismacolor – .005 XtraFine Black Fine Line Marker which is water-resistant. I am seriously in love with this marker. My sketching dream come true with this one. Thank you, Prismacolor!

For the watercolors, I used Ooku Watercolor brush set. You know what they say about “when you really want something, the universe conspires to give it to you”? Well this watercolor brush set was almost something like that with me. I had been toying with the idea of this sketch + watercolor card series for 2019 a couple months ago, and guess what ? I won a giveaway on Instagram by @Coykoicrafting that gave me this fantastic watercolor brush set from Ooku. I will share my review with them in some other post, but so far I am loving these markers – they have colors with good amount of pigment, these mix quite well with water and also with each other. For today’s card, I used the pink and the silver markers.

I made the floral image with leaves on one side of the heart thinking I will add a sentiment on the other side. But having just the sentiment felt like there was something still missing. So I added a smaller heart on the top of it with the sentiment stamped on it. The sentiment came from Simon Says Stamp Beautiful Flowers stamp set. I sprinkled some matching sequins around the flowers.

For the card base itself, I picked a Simon Says Stamp Fog colored cardstock and on the front I added scor lines (a trick I learned from one of my favorite crafters – Yana Smakula). Also since I could not just let the card alone, I added some clear icicle stickles to the center of my flower. Didn’t like it much, so added some ebony chunky glitter (black) from Recollections on top because that matched the colors better. Love it!!
