Just Add H2O – Spotlight water-coloring with inktense pencils

Hello my crafty friends!! Today I have another post in the Just Add H2O series. For this one, I explored a new technique and a new medium.

Just Add H2O - spotlight coloring with inktense pencils

The technique of spotlight coloring is really simple to understand – stamp a large continuous image and color only part of it, leaving the rest uncolored. To make the continuous image – either we can use a stamp that has the whole image in one, or we can build one up using multiple stamps. I used a continuous stamp here which has the little scene you see above, but the same technique can be done with flower bouquets and more.

To enhance the fact that only part of it is colored, we can combine the image with die cutting. We can die cut a shape and color the image only inside that shape. We can then either in-lay the die cut / colored piece or adhere it raised up. I did all of these steps for this card here :-)

I started by die cutting a rectangle panel from the largest stitched rectangle on which I stamped the bird on a branch scene from wplus9 A New Day stamp set. I also stamped the sentiment from the same set right under the branch. Then I used a washi tape to hold a circle die (Hero Arts infinity dies) in place while I cut the image around my bird.

For coloring the bird I used inktense pencils. They are quickly becoming one of my favorite watercoloring medium. I love the convenience of a pencil for detailing and the beautiful rich colors I can get just by adding a little H2O :-)

When I was happy with my coloring, I adhered the stamped-uncolored piece of the rectangle onto a card base made using SSS Sunshine card stock. I also die cut a fun foam circle which was smaller than the one with the bird, and used it to adhere and slightly raise the colored image over the uncolored image.

To finish the card, I added a couple enamel dots and also foam mounted one more additional sentiment from a PinkFresh studio sticker sheet.
