Hello my dear crafters, I am so in love with the Small Die of the month kit from Spellbinders this month. It is a kit with 3 different sets of layering dies – circle set (with 3 dies), hexagon set (with 3 dies) and a petal shaped set (with 4 dies). I used the hexagon set for my card today to create a card with multiple shakers.
I started by using a rectangle panel of white cardstock which is slightly smaller than a standard A2 sized card. I positioned all the three hexagons, held them in place with washi tape and ran it through my Platinum die cutting machine, all at once. Next, I used the die cut panel with Inspire embossing folder to add pretty texture on it. I added acetate behind the die cut opening, built individual wells and added my shaker pieces – 2 sizes of blue shimmery sequins and matching seed beads. I stuck to one size of shaker bits in each well.
Here are some tips I have learnt for making shaker cards:
Use strong adhesive like double sided tape (I used the one included in Spellbinders card kit) to attach acetate.
It’s easier to use foam tape cut into thin stripes to make non-rectangle wells. For this one though, I did not cut the foam tape myself, I used Darice Adhesive Foam 33 Double Sided Strips. These are thin in width and work great for the purpose!
After making the wells, this is what I think works best to avoid getting sequins stuck to the sides of wells or create a mess:
Before removing release paper from the top of the well-sides to expose adhesives, it helps to run a powder tool on the inside. This removes any stickiness from the sides of the wells and avoids making messes.
The powder tool might leave some white residue on the acetate, I like to wipe it clean from the inside, before adding sequins.
Also, once I add my sequins / shaker bits and take off the release paper, I find it hard to get exact placement of the cardbase. So I add another backer paper to seal the wells.
I followed all these tips for the card today.
Once my wells were filled up and sealed from the back too, I dressed up the front of the panel. In each hexagon cut out area, I added one hexagon design die cut from gold mirrored cardstock.
I also added the sentiment ‘oh joy!’ die cut from glitter blue cardstock from my stash. This sentiment die is from the current Spellbinders card kit. Once the sentiment was in place, all I did was added a few of my shaker bits on the outside.
So, there you have it – one way to use the layering dies, but without layering :-)
