Hello crafty friends! Today I am so excited to share my newest project with you. It is my first shadow box :-) And it meets today’s tic tac toe challenge #20 perfectly! In fact it meets several elements on the grid below.
Here’s my project, which I made for a friend at work to give it to his wife on her birthday. {He told me that she loved it. Makes me so happy!}
I used
specialty papers (watercolor paper, vellum, patterned papers, gold foiled paper and even some papers from the cover of an old StampinUp! catalog!)
a piece of golden thread, a ribbon, a burlap ribbon and a pearly thread (The one in the left top corner. I don’t know what you call it.)
builder stamps (Altenew Beautiful Day peonies for the flowers)
a new (to me) technique for adding dimension to the flowers
pearls / gemstones for the centers of the flowers as well as in the middle of the ribbon bow at the top
Here’s how I put this together. I started by stamping the Altenew peonies in blue and red colors. I am listing the actual colors below. I did each flower twice. Then I cut out the middle petals carefully and sponged the edges with same red ink that I used for the outline of my flowers. I layered the inside petals on the outside ones using foam squares and added a gemstone at the center of each using glossy accents. Look at all the beautiful dimension you can achieve by doing this simple trick.
I took two die cut hearts from some of my older projects – one used a watercolor paper, the other was vellum. I added a wash of red and yellow gansai tambi watercolors on the watercolor heart.
I also die cut the word Love using Hero Arts from gold foiled paper and punched out a few leaves from some scratch piece of green cardstock I had.
I cut out a few banners from some patterned paper and on one of them I stamped the message saying, “wish you the most beautiful day” using archival black ink.
I added several pieces of floating / hanging elements to give it an airy look – the burlap ribbon houses the gold thread and also anchors the center piece on it. I also tucked in pieces of golden, glittery baby’s breath from one of my friend’s daughter’s wedding decorations in there.
Finally I layered everything together, hiding adhesive under those parts of the vellum heart which are covered by the flowers and completed my shadow box.
Oh and yes, those light green and ochre papers you see? I wanted something to go under the layer of my center piece – it had to be contrasting with black, but by itself I did not make it overpowering in the whole design. Those are from StampinUp’s old catalogs and I think they fit perfectly! ;-) A girl has got to use what she has, isn’t it?
